Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have existed for many years. Kiev and Moscow have been at odds since the 2014 wars in which Russia annexed the province of Crimea, which belonged to Ukraine at the time, to his nation.

This annexation was viewed as the reclaiming of Russian land. Its connection to Russia via a referendum deemed illegitimate by Kiev would face stiff criticism from the majority of the international community.

Furthermore, as a result of the protests caused by the Association Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych resigned. Under the premise that Ukraine was a failing state run by "anti-Russian" authorities, Russian military were sent to Crimea. Not only that, but the possibility of Ukraine becoming a NATO ally and a member of the European Union increased Russia's "rage." (Read more)
